Don’t be intimidated by the thought of doing your first résumé. You will be surprised how much experience you have gained through various activities.

Creating a résumé helps you organize your experience, skills and work objectives. A résumé is also a necessary tool for an employer, as it provides the information he or she needs to assess your readiness for a job and conduct an interview with you.

The best résumés are simple in style and will be one sheet long. Here’s a look at the major elements you need to include.

Personal information
Put your name, address, phone number and e-mail address centered on the top of the page.

Job objective
You can use a specific objective if you are seeking work in a particular field, such as: “To obtain a position in health care that will enhance my knowledge and skills in preparation for my studies in medicine.” Or, your objective can be generic, such as: “To obtain a position in which I can enhance my work experience and skills.”

Education
List your school, your expected graduation date and your GPA if it’s good.

Work/volunteer experience and special skills
This is the most important part of the résumé. You should write this section to impress an employer with your skills, capabilities, and your ambition to work and grow.

If you have already worked in some capacity, list your last job first. Include any volunteer work. Write a brief paragraph about your job responsibilities.
